Time Rushing By
posted by Kylie Leane on July 7, 2017

Can you believe it's already July?
I can't.
Honestly, it seems the older I get the faster time just seems to rush by. Each year's pace quickens, and yet, nothing really changes around me. It is a very odd sensation, to feel the days roll into each other, day fading into night, and night blooming into day, at such a rapid pace, and still discovering myself in the same place I was the year before, and the year before that.
Is this truly what adult life is? I often find myself pondering...
Is this...all life is?
Anyway, before end up telling you all about my existential crisis, and trust me, I could waffle on about it, I have some exciting news to bring to the table.

Book Launch of Jonah and the Clockwork Goblin by Matthew Edwards
posted by Kylie Leane on March 10, 2017

Last night I had the wonderful opportunity to go to a book launch of an old university friend's first novel, published by Stone Table Books, Jonah & the Clockwork Goblin by Matthew Edwards.

Cover illustration and design by D.M. Cornish

It is always exciting to see a new book come to life. Knowing the background work, the ins-and-outs of what goes into making a book...well...a book, just makes a Book Launch feel all the more rewarding to attend.

I took an Uber to get to the book launch, my first time actually, and chatted to my driver as we headed down into the city. He was immensely curious about what I did, having never met anyone who worked as an illustrator and so, I gladly told him about the fascinating world of illustrating.

He sat there for awhile, pondering, before saying, "I never thought about it before, that someone actually has to make a front cover of a book, I always just glossed over them. I don't think I can even recall any front cover from any book I have ever read."

I laughed and replied. "Well, there is a whole industry built around just front covers."

I was going to post photos of the evening here, but none of them turned out. My phone camera has decided to die on me and just be utterly awful.
So, I suggest heading to Matthew Edwards Facebook Page as I am sure they'll have photos of the event up at some point.

I'll leave you with the blurb from the back of Jonah and the Clockwork Goblin.

Jonah is a fifteen-year-old orphan who thinks he already has enough problems in his life. He’s failing all his subjects at school, frequently tormented by the school bully, and can count the people who care about his life (including his cat) on one hand—with fingers to spare. When he faces losing his older brother, he’s convinced things couldn’t get worse. Then he is awoken in the middle of the night by a clockwork cyborg goblin who robs him of a cherished opal pendant and departs through a magical portal. In his pursuit of the goblin thief, Jonah finds himself cast into a world beneath his own where he must pick his friends wisely, grow up quickly, and choose between an eight-foot evil seductress queen and a thousand-year-old tree nymph if he is to survive —and save the world in the process.

Editing has Begun!
posted by Kylie Leane on March 2, 2017

I am very excited.
Moving forward on a project that has been sitting around for ages is really uplifting. I really, honestly, didn't think that anything would happen this year at all but - so grateful - my amazing editor, Elle, is helping me move forward with "The Dreamer's Castle" - which is the first novel in "The Cities of Gold". The 'sub-series' that sort of sits inbetween "Chronicles of the Children".

This book is set in the land of Utillia, the land of the Kattamonts.
A very different land from Pennadot. It was interesting to create a world vastly different from the world of Humans and Kelibs. I don't know how it will be received, but I hope readers will find it enjoyable and as fascinating as I did in creating it.

Ever onward dear readers! Ever onward!

Supporting Characters aren't Useless Lamps

Supporting Characters/Cast aren't Useless Lamps

This past weekend I saw the movie ‘Arrival’ – I cannot stress enough how beautiful, inspiring and visually stunning this movie was and I highly recommend going to see it, even now, I am still finding myself thinking about the contents of the movie.
I won’t talk much about it, because it is a movie that very much needs to be experienced without spoilers for the full impact to be felt.
However, I watch a lot of youtube reviewers and a couple of them have mentioned something that got me thinking about a topic that pops up in my thoughts from time to time: Supporting/Secondary Characters in Books (or movies).

Not All Damsels
posted by Kylie Leane on October 17, 2016

I am going to tell you all a secret.
So, maybe if you read my novels it might not be that much of a secret.
Here it goes.
I like knights, heroes, men who sweep in and save a damsel.
Now…I know this is a really controversial stance to have in this day and age…
But please, bear with me as I try to explain myself. I promise I haven’t been abducted by aliens—

1,000 Words Friday
posted by Kylie Leane on October 13, 2016

Greetings Dear Readers,
It's another 1,000 Words Friday!
Wow. They come around fast don't they. So, today, we're continuing on from last week's 1,000 words (or there about) and today I'm getting to introduce to you one of my all-time favourite characters from across all the universes I dabble in. She has changed a lot over the years. (I recently lost my hard-drive, as explain in an earlier blog, so I am very glad I printed a lot of artwork in my earlier years to show her gradual change!)
Her name, however, has remained the same, so has her love of smoking, tea-drinking and violence.

Greetings dear Readers,
Today I bring you another 1,000 Words Friday.
This little piece is from a series I sometimes talk about: "The Tea Traders" - it's from the opening Chapter.
It's also linked to another book I'm currently writing called "Bloodstorm" which goes way, way, WAY, back into the history of the world of Aburu when 'tea' first arrived.
